PERINATAL DENTAL CARE
Your teeth and gums are affected by pregnancy just like other tissues in your body. You may not be aware that the health of your gums may also affect the health of your baby-to-be.
Pregnancy gingivitis affects about half of all pregnant women and can cause swelling, bleeding and redness or tenderness in the gum tissue. Additionally, periodontal disease, a serious gum infection that destroys attachment fibers and supporting bone that hold teeth in the mouth, may harm your baby’s health. Pregnant women with periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that’s born prematurely, likely due to the presence of prostaglandin, a labor-inducing chemical found in oral bacteria.
If you are pregnant and eligible for SoonerCare (Medicaid), you:
- Are entitled to extended dental benefits. This is an exciting new addition to the Medicaid coverage in which you currently participate.
- Are entitled to extra coverage to help you and your baby become as healthy as possible.
Shortline Dental can provide the following services covered by Medicaid during and shortly after your pregnancy:
- Extractions of painful teeth
- Deep cleanings
- Exams and X-rays
- Removal of impacted wisdom teeth
- Fillings
