Pregnancy Dental Care

Expectant Mothers Need Special Dental Attention

Pregnancy affects your teeth and gums just like other tissues in your body. But what you might not be aware of is that the health of your gums may also affect the health of your baby-to-be.

Preventive Dental Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy gingivitis affects about half of all pregnant women and can cause swelling, bleeding, and redness or tenderness of the gums. Additionally, periodontal disease, a serious gum infection that destroys the bond between teeth and gums allowing tooth loss, may harm your baby’s health. Pregnant women with periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby that’s born prematurely, likely due to the presence of prostaglandin, a labor-inducing chemical found in oral bacteria.

If you are pregnant and eligible for SoonerCare (Medicaid), you are:

  • Entitled to extended dental benefits, an exciting new addition to the Medicaid coverage in which you currently participate.
  • Entitled to extra coverage to help you and your baby become as healthy as possible.

Shortline Dental can provide the following services covered by Medicaid during, and shortly after, your pregnancy:

  • Extractions of painful teeth
  • Deep cleanings
  • Exams and x-rays
  • Removal of impacted wisdom teeth
  • Fillings
